Is there any truth to the corporate media claim that Dennis cannot win in Washington State?

Instead of repeating the corporate propaganda that Dennis cannot win,

We should be studying why Dennis won many times in the past

When everyone said he could not win…

And why he can and will win now.

Getting Past Corporate Propaganda

No matter how hard we might try, we are all influenced by corporate propaganda. We are surrounded by it every day. Dennis himself has talked about this. If we all believe that war is inevitable, then war becomes inevitable. If we all believe that there is no way to keep Dennis in Congress, then there is no way to keep Dennis in Congress.

How can we break free from corporate messages that say we cannot win? Dennis once said that if the truth sets us free, then lies also have the power to keep us in chains. What we need to do is examine our assumptions, look for the facts and discover the truth.

Here are just some of the common myths we have been told by the corporate media:

Dennis is a progressive and so liberal that independent voters would never vote for him….

Washington voters would resent Dennis as a carpetbagger coming from another State….

It is too late for Dennis to come to Washington State and win this year…

We already have lots of good candidates and do not need Dennis to win this year…

Dennis should move out here, get established and then run a couple of years from now…

But is there any truth to any of these claims?

Would independent voters vote for Dennis? I have lived in a community of Republicans and Independent voters for more than 20 years. I also have the distinction of being the only Democratic Legislative Candidate to get the majority of the vote in my community. Six thousand of them were willing to split their tickets and vote for me… despite the fact that I am a progressive Democrat. I have been going door to door talking with thousands of Independents for the past 4 years. This experience has helped me better understand them. Many of my independent neighbors have told me they would love to vote for Dennis. They like his honesty and the way he is willing to criticize both political parties.

But more to the point, Dennis has a long track record of getting independent voters to vote for him. In Ohio, Dennis ran in a Congressional District where the average Democratic vote in the previous 10 elections had been 40%. Dennis’s average victory during the past 8 elections has been 57%. Dennis completely converted this district from a solid red district to a solid blue district. Dennis did this by converting over 80% of all independent voters into Democrats. Dennis was able to get over 120,000 independent voters to vote for him in Ohio. So the claim that independents would not vote for Dennis is FALSE.

What about being a carpetbagger? Of the current Democratic candidates in the new 1st CD, two are from other States (Darcy Burner and Roger Goodman) and one is even from another country (Darshan). None of this matters to any of my neighbors. Many of them are also from other States. In fact, one in three voters in our State are from another State! In this report, we will provide several examples of candidates moving into a new district to run for office and winning. These examples include Slade Gordon and Jay Inslee.

Is it really too late for Dennis to mount an effective campaign in Washington State? This is what I was told in 2008 when I announced that I was running for the State legislature during the first week in May. Despite the fact that no one would endorse me and I had no money and was outspent 20 to1, I built the largest volunteer group in the State and nearly won the election – doing better than any other Democratic challenger in the State – better than any Democrat has done in the 5th Legislative District in the past 20 years. It is more important to have the right candidate with the right message starting late than to have the wrong candidate with an early start. Dennis is the right candidate with the right message for the independent voters of the 1sr CD. Most of my neighbors will not even start thinking about the election until they get their ballots in the mail – which is over 3 months from now.

What about the claim that we already have lots of good Democratic candidates running? I know them all very well. In 2006 and 2008, I went door to door and passed out thousands of Darcy Burner flyers. I think Darcy is great. But my independent neighbors saw her as a rich Microsoft Manager and would not vote for her. Then in 2010, I passed out Suzan Del Bene Flyers. My neighbors saw her as an even richer Microsoft Manager and would not vote for her. Ditto for Laura Ruderman who lost badly in 2004 when she ran for Secretary of State. She was only able to get one in three independent voters to vote for her. As for Roger Goodman, his top issue is legalizing marijuana. This is a commendable goal. But most of my neighbors are parents trying to talk their kids out of doing drugs. Legalizing pot is not a winning issue in East King County. The remaining two candidates have almost no support among Democrats and have no hope of making it past the primary. None of my neighbors are going to vote for any of the current challengers.

Below is a chart showing comparing the ability of the each of the current Democratic candidates to get independent voters versus Dennis Kucinich’s ability to win over independent voters:

Given that Republican John Koster has been able to get 60% of the independent vote in the portion of the 2nd Congressional District that has been moved to the 1st Congressional District, the only two Democratic candidates who have any chance of defeating him are Steve Hobbs and Dennis Kucinich. But Steve Hobbs has no chance because he has no support among the strong Democrats who will be voting in the Primary. Dennis on the other hand, would be very likely to win both the Primary and the General Election.

What about the idea of waiting and running two years from now?  This would be a huge political blunder. Dennis would be running not against John Koster the candidate, but John Koster the Incumbent. I know… Dennis has defeated Incumbent Republicans lots of times before. But it is much harder to beat an incumbent because John Koster will have been able to use the whole two years into brainwashing the voters that he is a good guy who is on their side. The time to root out the bad weeds is before they start growing. The time to run is now.

Using Cold Hard Facts to Make Decisions rather than Gut Feelings

But perhaps my neighbors are just humoring me by saying they like Dennis. And perhaps the independent voters in Washington State are different than the independent voters in Ohio.  Important decisions like this should not be made based on antidotal stories and gut feelings. Nor should they be made on subjective political judgment – which is wrong as much as it is right. Instead, important decisions should be based on cold hard facts. That is what this report is all about.

In the following pages we will review national polling data to carefully examine the priorities and values of independent voters. This data confirms that the values of independent voters closely align with the positions and actions of Dennis Kucinich. This is why Dennis has done so well in past elections getting Independent swing voters to vote for him.

We will then take a very close look at the past elections in the new 1st Congressional District by combining the Legislative District results for the five legislative districts that now make up the new 1st CD. This analysis shows that the new 1st CD can only be won by a Democrat such as Dennis who is able to win over huge numbers of independent voters.

We will then look at the past elections of the current group of Democratic challengers. Sadly, the evidence here shows that none of the current Democratic candidates running in the new 1st CD – of the four who have any chance of making it past the Top Two Primary - have any ability to win over a majority of independent voters. Therefore none of them have any chance of defeating John Koster. If Dennis does not come out here and run in the 1st CD this year, we will lose the 1st CD for this election, and likely for future elections as well.

Finally, we will look at all of the other benefits that the Washington State Democratic Party would get if we had a progressive Democrat like Dennis running in the 1st Congressional District. Not only would Dennis be likely to win - but having an aggressive, active, inspirational and fearless campaigner like Dennis out here getting independents to turn out and vote for the Democratic Party would greatly increase Jay Inslee’s chances of winning and being our next Governor. The opposite is also true. Without Dennis running in the 1st CD, we might wind up with Rob McKenna for Governor.

Again, this report is not just about subjective opinions. We are going to get past the corporate propaganda by looking at the cold hard facts. Of course the corporate media is going to say Dennis can’t win. The corporate media has been demonizing and crucifying Dennis for many years. But we are going to look past the corporate propaganda and seek out the truth. Because that is what important decisions like this should be based on. When we look at the actual facts, we discover that almost everything the corporate media and conventional political insiders tell us about Dennis Kucinich and about how to win elections is wrong.

There is too much at stake here to fall victim to false assumptions and corporate propaganda. It is not just Dennis’s future that is at stake here. It is the future of all of us and all of our children. With the US threatening to enter yet another dangerous war, this time with Iran and/or Syria, what is at stake right now in this election is not merely the future of Washington State, but the future of the United States and the whole planet. So it is worth taking a few minutes to learn more about why Dennis can win in Washington State.

We are not going to quietly fade away…

I will not rule out a run elsewhere should my district be eliminated or radically altered through redistricting. From Afghanistan to Workers Rights, and from Libya to climate change, there's simply too much at stake for our voice to be eliminated. We cannot let a group of downstate politicians silence me and our movement - they would like nothing more than to stop hearing our calls for peace over violence and the people's interests over corporate handouts. So, no, we are not going to quietly fade away, and let corporate interests have their way. Instead, we're gearing up for a long and difficult campaign in 2012 - wherever that may be. I know it's worth it, and I know we can prevail.
